‘parallax’ is an ongoing photo series using an outsider’s view to photograph and present a community in a new perspective.
scope: this project focuses on gaining new perspectives from the world around you. Using various artist residencies around the United States and abroad to create a community based cultural exchange, I will photograph local communities, people, and spaces and create a free public photo exhibit. As an outsider I can capture the community from a fresh angle. I’ll shoot over several weeks using medium format b&w film and vintage cameras, hand processing the film myself and scanning them to digital files which will be copied and given to that community for archiving.
once the phots are processed and scanned, i will organize an exhibit.
exhibition goal: a free exhibit of the photos taken will be organized for that community to enjoy, using either a local gallery or convert an existing unused venue into a gallery space. the exhibit would be available free to the local community to come view for at least the period of one month, maybe more depending on that particular community.
artist statement: I am not very good at writing about myself, which is probably why I take pictures instead. I have always loved learning and exchanging ideas between people from different communities and culture and I use photography as a way to interact and communicate. Especially after more than a year of dealing with isolation during a pandemic and the political and economic divides we are feeling, we need to be building bridges and share our different cultures with each other so we can grow together as a human race.
budget: the total budget for this project is approximately $8,000, though with the help of local organizations, grants, donation fundraising, and other artist support, the budget can be reduced.
